Maverick conservationists are ready to use controversial methods to save threatened species from extinction. Is the cost to nature worth paying before it’s too late?

November 2024, a newborn dolphin strands on La Coronilla Beach, Uruguay. She is a Franciscana - the most endangered dolphin species in South America. Conservationists think the unthinkable: removing rescued orphans like this from the wild and keeping them in a man-made sanctuary. Never before has a stranded Franciscana been successfully raised to maturity. But if we don’t act, the Franciscana River Dolphin will be lost forever.
We dive into the world of ex-situ conservation - radical, spectacular, and sometimes controversial efforts to protect endangered species outside their natural environments.

Each episode explores a different project where scientists and conservationists employ original, and sometimes contentious techniques to prevent extinction. The series emphasizes the human stories behind these efforts, showcasing the dedication, challenges, and ethical dilemmas faced by experts dedicated to species preservation.*
